About

Perhaps the most revealing thing I can say about myself is that I’m only writing this because I’ve been procrastinating about writing a “real” bio, and it’s gotten a bit embarrassing to have nothing on this page.

So what can I say? Eight months a year, I’m a graduate student in Southeast Asian studies and Journalism at UC Berkeley. The rest of the time, I try to be out in the real world, talking to people, going through archives, writing, taking photographs and producing multimedia stories.

Academically, I specialize in political science and modern history of island Southeast Asia (so please don’t ask why the MA thesis is a textual analysis of 19th century footnotes in a 16th century chronicle). Journalistically, I’m interested in everything, but most especially human rights, social movements, political violence, conflict and conflict resolution.

If you want to know more, I suggest you, um, read my blog…
